Triumphant Return!

Well, I bet you all thought we abandoned this thing, huh?  WRONG! Joke’s on you, suckers. We’re back, yo (not unlike IU basketball…94 days til Hoosier Hysteria!)

Alright so we’ve definitely been neglectful to our little blog here.  I blame it on a couple of things: first, I started a real big girl lawyer job which has been taking up some of my free time (thankfully!), and secondly it has been FREAKING HOT and not at all conducive to house projects.  Lastly, we’ve had an adorable new addition to our family in the form of our new Godson – Foster Jacob!

But don’t worry, we’ve been getting plenty done around here too, and I just uploaded a bajillion pictures as evidence.

I’m not sure where to start, since the next several posts will not be in any type of chronological order.  I think I’ll dedicate this post to a little table makeover I did one afternoon.  My mom picked up this table on clearance at Kohl’s a couple of years ago when I got my first apartment:

It didn’t have those marks when she bought it…those, unfortunately, were incurred during multiple moves in a short time period.  Plus, the cherry colored wood didn’t really go with our new decor.  So, on a day when I was feeling like going on a painting spree (pay no attention to that orange frame…that’s a post for another day. UNSEE IT!!), I unscrewed the wood top from the legs…
And took our random orbital sander to it, to rough it up and remove some of the glossy finish..notice the shine before:
…and after:
Probably unnecessary, and nothing a coat of primer couldn’t have fixed, but oh well.  I was in a power tools-type mood I guess. I had some gray paint on hand (leftover from painting our dining room), so I gave the table a couple of coats:
I debated painting the legs, but they were in good shape and I didn’t want to deal with the paint chipping off in a couple of years.  For now, we have it down in our newly remodeled basement as a little side table (ignore the messy blankets and pillows…this was clearly taken around 10:30am while I was watching the Nate Berkus Show during my unemployed phase):
I hope you appreciate the little vignette we set up for this picture.  It remains relatively unchanged today, even though it’s been a good couple months.  I never claimed to be a master photo stager.
Ok, so hopefully you’ll take this as a good faith effort that I’m gonna try to revive this blog.  Keep checking back, because – I’m not gonna lie – I totally thrive on number of hits and comments. At least I’m honest, right?

Kitchen Makeover!

You may remember in my Houseolutions post that one project I wanted to tackle this year was painting our blue kitchen…

Well, thanks to some unexpected free time this week, I finally just did it.  It was therapeutic and amazing and horrible all at the same time…and I have all the details for ya.

So I had obviously been thinking about doing this for a long time, but I didn’t have a good idea of the look I was going for, which was holding up the whole process.  That was until I saw this beauty on Pinterest (originally via for the love of a house):

OH.MY.G.  Dream kitchen.  I love everything about this (and there are tons more yummy pictures on the blog…click the link or picture to go swoon). So, seeing that picture and then seeing this…

…made me sad inside. Time for a change.

Luckily, the owner of that amazing kitchen has kindly shared every source and detail, including the paint colors.  In the picture above you can only see a small sliver of it above the window, but the color I stole picked is Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52. Obviously its nice and light to open up our tiny kitchen, and since the dining room is now gray, it all kinda goes together.

Covering the blue was no easy feat…even using the best paint Benjamin Moore makes (Aura…guaranteed to cover anything in 2 coats), I needed a lot of paint to get rid of it.

It’s almost impossible to show in pictures but despite two coats of paint, I was still feeling like some blue was coming through, turning what was supposed to be a lovely light gray into sea foam bluey-greeny-gray. Hmm.

I gave the entire room a THIRD coat (with a free gallon of paint from the Benjamin Moore retailer…they really stick by that guarantee!) and now it is looking much better – and bigger…lighter paint makes a HUGE difference in a small space!

(Theo is checking things out)

Hope you like it!!  A few things…

1. If it looks like my house is a mess, it’s because it is. This is what our dining room has looked like all week…it’s driving us insane but is a necessary evil I guess:

2. If it looks like I was drunk when painting, you would be wrong…but I certainly wasn’t super careful around the cabinets or ceiling:

But that’s ok because I’m SOOOOOO not finished with this kitchen! More big changes are taking place as I type this.  Stick around for Kitchen Makeover: Part II, coming soon!

Gray Area

Hi everyone! As promised in yesterday’s post, I’m back to show you the results of a room that was begging  to be painted (as least in my mind).  As a preface, we moved into our freshly painted house in April, 2011. Besides some Dr. Seuss stencils in our guest room, nothing was begging for a paint job.  In fact, the professionally painted house had me feeling guilty about wanting to change anything at all, despite the fact that most of the colors are not ones I would have picked on my own.  So, with that mindset, I had been telling myself that tackling another painting project (after the guest room and downstairs half bath) was unnecessary.

Then, I reached my breaking point (I know, a little dramatic. It really was more of a realization point). Since we had some free time over the holidays, I decided to repaint the room that has been annoying me since day 1:

The dining room! Here’s a very literal “day one” picture…we had just moved in and hadn’t even built our dining room table yet.  You’ll notice the lovely mustard color on the walls.

No, can’t see it very well? How about this?

Another early picture.  Notice the sheen coming off the semi-gloss yellowy walls.  Yikes.  Here’s one more:

As you can tell, it photographs in weird ways depending on the time of day.  I might be making it out to be a little worse than it really was, but I certainly was never a fan, and it had to go.  But, what color to use?  Luckily, Pinterest usually knows what I like even if (subconsciously) I don’t notice a pattern.  I started looking through rooms I had pinned (saved, for those of you not on Pinterest yet…get on it!) and started noticing some similarities:

(Edit: I was totally surprised to hear that Bryan received many questions after I posted this picture. Let me just state for the blog record that NO I am not pregnant! Believe me, when that day comes – in the far and distant future –  I won’t be trying to subtly let everyone know in some cryptic way via one inspiration picture on our blog. Promise.)

Apparently I like gray rooms? Who knew?

So, after running the idea by Bryan and getting the go-ahead, I spent the better part of New Year’s Eve day running around town picking up paint chips:

…and taping them up around the room in different places to get an idea of what looked best:

After narrowing it down, we decided on “Galveston Gray” by Benjamin Moore, which is the bottom color in the picture above:

The chip was a little darker than I was originally thinking, but Bryan thought a darker, bolder gray  would look good so I picked up a gallon in an eggshell finish.

(Disclaimer: I once said that we would be using semi-gloss paint throughout the house, since it’s already on most of the walls.  I take that back.  It works in bathrooms and smaller spaces but as you could see in the “before” pictures, the dining room gets a lot of sun and semi-gloss paint creates a super shiny situation…not good!)

Before getting to the “after” shots, I wanted to share a little tip that I picked up on another blog (I can’t remember where I saw this but I’ll come back and let you know if I ever find it again!) Our house has a couple arched doorways, and one is the entrance to the dining room:

Very cool architecturally, but a pain to paint since there are no sharp corners or molding to create a crisp paint line.  My main concern is that we’d have a lot of yellow paint showing through, so I carried over some of the tan (from the entryway and staircase) into the dining room:

That way, any paint that doesn’t get covered by the gray will be the same color as the entryway…make sense?  I still didn’t get the sharpest line (the walls are all curved…arggggggg!!!!!), but at least there’s no awkward yellow spots. I’m not too worried about it – it wasn’t the best looking line before, and the pros did it:

Anyways – you’re probably ready to actually see the new room, so here ya go!

Sorry the room is still pretty naked…I’m thinking about switching up some of the wall decor and don’t want to rush it…pictures will come eventually! But overall we’re really happy with the new color, especially how it plays off the finish we used on the buffet (read about that project here) and the liquor cabinet (and read about that project here!)

Hope everyone likes it! Did anyone think we were crazy for painting a room gray?  I definitely had fears that it would look like a cave (or jail cell).  Comments are always welcome!

katie
